Aluminum Battery Fed Turbopump
Aluminum Battery Fed Turbopump
The goals of this project was to produce a prototype, and work through the process of designing, manufacturing and assembling a component. The design and manufacturing of this turbopump provided research into standards for machining, turbopump design, GD&T, and iterative design for the turbopump.
Aluminum 6061 was chosen due to the ease of machining and the low cost of the material. Aluminum could be used to drive non-cryogenic fluids for such as kerosene. Aluminum 6061 could be used for cryogenic fluids as the material increases in strength as the temperature decreases. Although, aluminum is not a preferred material in the environment that rocket engines operate in, this being extreme temperatures, high pressures and high stresses endured within the material.Â
